EURO9000 Specs

Unique Features of the Euro9000 Locomotive

Dual-Power Capability

The Euro9000 offers unmatched flexibility with its dual-power traction concept, seamlessly switching from electrified to non-electrified tracks. This versatility is powered by an advanced ABB designed traction system, providing up to 9000 kW of electric traction and two 950kW Caterpillar Diesel engines. These engines can be used in combination, or in single mode, ensuring the optimal traction power is always available.

High Tractive Effort and Efficiency

With an impressive 9 MW and tractive effort of 500 kN, the Euro9000 is ideal for heavy freight operations across Europe’s key rail corridors, even on challenging gradients. This makes it an ideal solution for freight operators crossing mountain areas, like the Alps. The Euro9000 will replace expensive double traction; not only saving on the costs of a second locomotive, but also significantly reducing your energy costs.

Remote Control System

The Euro9000 is equipped with a Schweizer Electronic remote control system by, featuring two transmitters and developed for operation in multiple countries. The system ensures optimal operational flexibility and safety, supported by redundant batteries for uninterrupted performance on your first- and last mile operation. The system can save on expensive 3rd party shunting costs and/or provide shunting options where no are available.

Side mounted driver desk

The Euro9000 locomotive is equipped with an ergonomically designed, side-mounted driver desk on both sides of the cabin, this improves visibility and control, particularly during shunting operations. The side mounted driver desk was specially designed for terminal operations. The system can save on expensive 3rd party shunting costs and/or provide shunting options where no are available.

Limited Axle Load

The Euro9000 locomotive has a limited axle load of only 20 tons, making it suitable to operate on very specific infrastructure, but also still allowing for a future upgrade with a (D)AC. The boogie of the Euro9000 creates very low lateral forces, due to the flexible middle axle, allowing a minimum curve radius of only 90 meters and even reduced track access fees in certain countries.

Electronic Door Access

The Euro9000 locomotive is equipped with an electronic door access system that allows secure entry using an access card. This system provides registration of loco access and ensures that only authorized personnel can enter the locomotive, improving safety and operational control while seamlessly integrating into daily operations.

3kV Boost-Mode

The Euro9000 locomotive offers a special 3kV Boost-Mode, providing an additional power output of 1.7 MW in countries with 3kV DC infrastructure. This feature enhances the locomotive’s performance, particularly on challenging routes, allowing for greater tractive effort and improved efficiency. By utilizing the 3kV Boost-Mode, operators can handle heavier loads without the need for additional locomotives.

Energy cost savings

The Euro9000 locomotive is designed for optimal energy efficiency, utilizing ABB’s advanced 3-level topology converter, this new technology significantly reduces energy consumption during operations. But compared to traditional Bo’Bo’ locomotives, it also provides increased energy recuperation and in combination with the automatic electronic brake blending, the maximum of energy costs saving is ensured. Additionally, the latest generation of Caterpillar C32 diesel engines ensure minimal fuel usage. The 2 engines can be used in combination, or in single mode, always ensuring the optimal fuel usage, making the locomotive very cost-effective.

Eco-Friendly Operations

The Euro9000 will support in reducing your companies carbon footprint. It meets the latest TSI and environmental standards, including compatibility with EN15940-compliant Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fuels, offering CO2 neutral operation also in diesel mode. The diesel engines are designed to meet Stage V emission standards, ensuring compliance with the latest environmental regulations. The locomotive is certified according to TSI Noise and TSI Tunnel, evidencing its limited noise and particle emissions. Additionally, the locomotive can operate with a single engine when full power is not required, further minimizing emissions and fuel consumption.

High reliability and availability

The Euro9000 locomotive is designed to provide exceptional reliability and availability, backed by performance guarantees. With an extended maintenance interval of 50,000 kilometers, operators benefit from reduced downtime. This ensures that the Euro9000 remains in operation for longer periods, maximizing efficiency and productivity. But also ensuring a limited number of workshops, saving on downtime, expensive transport costs and driver capacity, of bringing the locomotive to and from the workshop.

Future-Ready Design

The modular construction of the Euro9000 allows for easy upgrades and customization, ensuring that the locomotive can adapt to future technological advancements and specific operational needs. It is already equipped with the latest ETCS L2 Baseline 3.4.0, but the Euro9000 is also prepared for future battery integration, even offering a tri-mode option (panto-emgone-battery). The Euro9000 is prepared for the (Digital) Automatic Coupler, and is already offered with an optional Hybrid Automatic Coupler.
