Interview with Martin Wischner, Member of the Board of Havelländische Eisenbahn AG, about the EuroDual and the collaboration with European Loc Pool

Frauenfeld / Wustermark OT Elstal, 20.06.2025

European Loc Pool (ELP) is a pioneer in providing Full-Service Leasing solutions for Rail Freight Industry. Close exchange with our customers and their feedback is very important to us.
We had the opportunity to speak with Martin Wischner, Member of the Board of Havelländische Eisenbahn AG (HVLE), about his experience with the EuroDual and the cooperation with ELP.

1. What has been your experience with the EuroDual and its performance in your operations?

HVLE’s experience with the EuroDual has been consistently positive. As one of the first operators, the company has tested the locomotive intensively since its market launch, with impressive results.
“The EuroDual is exactly what we need from a technical perspective,” says Martin Wischner, Member of the Board of Havelländische Eisenbahn AG.
A particular highlight is the seamless entry into service. “We’ve often been the first customer for new locomotives in the past, which usually means dealing with some technical teething problems. That wasn’t the case with the EuroDual. It worked reliably right from the start,” Wischner adds.
Another plus is its low energy consumption. The EuroDual not only meets the requirements of Heavy Freight transport but also sets new standards in efficiency. “The consumption values are even below the ambitious targets we had defined in the specification,” Wischner emphasizes.

2. What advantages or challenges do you see in using the EuroDual in your industry?

For Martin Wischner, it’s clear: the EuroDual meets exactly the demands of today’s Rail Freight transport. The combination of electric and diesel-electric drive offers clear advantages in daily operations.
“Our transports often run on routes that are not fully electrified. The EuroDual is able to seamlessly bridge these sections at full power. This isn’t just a classic ‘last mile’ scenario. We’re talking about longer stretches without overhead lines and challenging terrain,” explains Wischner.
At the same time, the locomotive remains powerful and efficient. The hybrid drive significantly reduces diesel usage. “We no longer run purely electric or diesel. We operate as needed. This has brought our diesel share down to below 20 percent, which is a major step forward in terms of energy use and emissions.”
However, challenges remain, particularly in cross-border operations. “We would like to see the EuroDual approved in more countries, especially towards the east. If we could run routes to Poland without changing locomotives, it would be a major logistical and economic benefit.”
The EuroDual has proven to be a future-proof solution for HVLE. “It gives us the flexibility we need in Heavy Freight transport, without compromising on performance,” Wischner concludes.

3. What do you value in your collaboration with ELP?

The collaboration between HVLE and ELP is based on mutual trust, long-standing experience, and a shared understanding of the requirements in the Rail Freight Industry. “We’ve known each other for many years and we know what we can count on. Of course, negotiations can be tough, but in the end, it’s always about finding a solution that works for both sides,” says Martin Wischner.
He particularly appreciates the technical expertise and reliability of ELP.
“I’d do a deal with Willem Goosen on a handshake any day. That level of trust isn’t a given in our industry, but it works because we’ve known and relied on each other for years.”
Continuity of personnel is also key. “The people at ELP remain the same. That consistency builds trust in communication and implementation. When challenges arise, we speak directly and find pragmatic solutions.” Additionally, ELP is more than just a financial partner.
“They have a deep understanding of the product and don’t just think in numbers – they also provide technical solutions. That makes the partnership especially valuable.”
