Frauenfeld, Switzerland, January, 04, 2024

European Loc Pool (ELP), a leading provider of innovative locomotive leasing services based in Switzerland, has recently confirmed an order for 10 new EuroDual locomotives, marking a significant expansion of their existing fleet and underlining their commitment to driving innovation in the European Rail Freight Industry. This order builds upon the successful partnership established in 2018 with Stadler and further emphasizes the fruitful outcomes of their collaboration.

Originally entering into a framework agreement for a minimum of 100 6-axle Co’Co’ hybrid locomotives, ELP has now surpassed initial expectations by ordering a total of 114 locomotives. Notably, the first 101 Locomotives from the initial agreement have now all been deployed on long-term full-service leases, servicing over 30 customers across six different countries in Europe. Another significant milestone in the success story of ELP!

European Loc Pool is particularly proud that several existing customers have decided to further expand their fleet with additional ELP locomotives. Both the performance and flexibility of the locomotive as well as the ELP full-service package have clearly convinced these customers.

With a remarkable tractive effort of 500kN, the EuroDual outperforms all electric and diesel locomotives in Europe, allowing for a substantial increase in load capacity of up to 30%. EuroDual’s exceptional reliability, high availability, and extended maintenance intervals ensure minimal workshop stops, translating to increased operational efficiency, higher productivity and cost-effectiveness.

These new EuroDual locomotives are scheduled to be delivered in 2025 and 2026 and they are not yet leased. This new order is increasing ELP’s total fleet size to 114 locomotives (84 EuroDual and 30 Euro9000 locomotives).

The EuroDuals will be delivered with homologation for Germany and Austria. Additionally, the EuroDual homologation is pending in Slovenia and Croatia following the recent approval in Serbia. ELP will be able to provide these locomotives with a special corridor package, including Slovenia, Croatia, and Serbia, creating a corridor from the northern German ports to the Adriatic ports. This option will also become available for the existing ELP-EuroDual fleet.

Today, 64 EuroDual locomotives from ELP are in operation, of which 58 with the configuration Germany and Austria and 6 in Scandinavia, with 20 EuroDuals still in the pipeline. Additionally, 7 Euro9000 next-generation locomotives of the configuration Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Netherlands, and Belgium are currently in operation. Another 10 EuroDual and 23 Euro9000 locomotives are to be commissioned and handed over this year.

More about Hybrid Locomotives

European Loc Pool (ELP) focuses on innovative six-axle hybrid locomotives with a power output of up to 2.8 MW in diesel mode, 9 MW in electric mode, and a traction force of 500 kN. All vehicles come equipped with ETCS-Baseline 3 as standard for operation on Level 2 tracks. The first ELP EuroDual locomotives have been in operation on the German rail network since April 2020. They enable operation on electrified and non-electrified lines, as well as last-mile and shunting operations. All Dual locomotives are equipped with remote control.

From mid-2023, the second generation of ELP’s dual locomotives, the Euro9000, were put into service as a hybrid multi-system electric locomotive designed for use in all European corridors. As the “launching customer,” European Loc Pool ordered the first ten Euro9000 locomotives from Stadler in May 2019. The first version with 1.9 MW of diesel and 9 MW of electric power at 500 kN tractive effort will be used in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, and Switzerland. Subsequently, the locomotive’s area of operation will be expanded to other countries and corridors.
